Is It Possible To Communicate With The Dead?

Many people believe it is possible. There are even those who make a living by attempting to do it. However, the Bible gives no evidence of the living communicating with the dead. On the contrary, it indicates it is not possible.

The account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) proves the living and dead cannot communicate with one another. The rich man, having died and now in hades (the place of the dead), knew it was not possible to communicate with the living. Had he been able to speak with his brothers (or vise versa) he would not have asked that Lazarus be sent to warn them. It was not possible that Lazarus or anyone else could come back to this world (v.26).

There is no object or point in the living speaking with the dead. What would we talk about?

Would we ask them what it’s like there? The Bible tells us that (Luke 16:22-25). For a FEW, it’s a place of peace, comfort and joy (Matthew 25:21,25). A place where the righteous worship and serve God forevermore (Revelation 21-22). But for MOST, it is a place of outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30). It is a place of fire and brimstone where the unrighteous are in torment forevermore (Revelation 14:10-11).

Would we ask for advice from the dead? The rich man gives us that (Luke 16:27-31). Such advice is a warning to the living that they must obey the Gospel and live unto God to avoid that eternal place of punishment. But, who will heed the warning? Few!

Would we ask to be comforted in knowing if our loved ones are all right? The Bible tells us that also (Luke 16:22-25). We can observe the life style of our loved ones. Warn now, not later!

What would we want to know, that we really need to know, that the Bible does not already tell us? The only possible things we could learn from the dead would simply be to satisfy our curiosity. And, if the Bible does not give us the answer to such questions, then we do not need to know it -- it’s not essential.

We MUST be concerned with our life NOW so we will be prepared when it comes our turn to actually see the other side. Are YOU ready to leave this world?
